Summary |
This pamphlet contains the journal of the then Major George Washington, covering the period from October 31, 1753 to January 16, 1754, during his excursion into western Pennsylvania. Governor Robert Dinwiddle of Virginia dispatched the young officer to the region on a mission to discover the extent of French encroachment along the Ohio River. It records Washington's councils with French forces and his contacts with Native Americans in the area, and includes a hand-colored map of the western parts of Virginia to the Mississippi River. Dinwiddie's subsequent letter to the commandant of the French troops at Fort Le Boeuf demanding the withdrawal of his troops, as well as the translation of Commandant Legardeur de St. Pierre's reply, is appended to Washington's entries in the pamphlet. This intelligence report from Washington, who was only 21 at the time it was written, became one of the opening salvos of the French and Indian War. Originally printed in Williamsburg without the map, the Foundation's copy was published in London. |
