Description |
This portrait of Josiah Quincy (1710-1784) by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) depicts the distinguished middle-aged merchant and diplomat waist length, seated in what appears to be a Chippendale-style side chair against a modulated green background. He is wearing a white wig and a white shirt with lacey cuffs showing through the sleeves of a gold-buttoned brown coat and waistcoat, and is holding a small book. Quincy was born in Braintree, Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1728. He moved to Boston in 1735 where he became a partner in a mercantile business. John Singleton Copley was one of America's most famous portrait painters. Born and raised in Boston, he became that city's most esteemed portraitist and was sought after by prominent residents such as Paul Revere and John Adams. He later traveled to Europe and settled permanently in England in 1775 where he redirected his focus to history painting. |
