Description |
The Collection's eleven watercolors by James Peller Malcolm comprise one of the most important groups of Philadelphia views completed after the city became the national capital in 1790. The Wissahickon Creek, apparently at its confluence with the Schuylkill River, is shown in this painting. A rock formation juts from the steep right bank, and floating logs are in the waterway in the foreground. The land rising from both banks is filled with trees and fenceline, and a Federal-style house is seen on a hill in the distance. Born in Philadelphia, Malcolm completed this series of watercolors soon after returning to the city after three years of training at the Royal Academy in London. The paintings include scenes of public buildings in Philadelphia, nearby country estates, and local landscapes. Malcolm ultimately moved back to England permanently. |
