Description |
The newly created fort and city of Mojave in the Arizona Territory are depicted in the distance in this desert scene. The fort, with an American flag flying from a pole in its midst, is on top of a bluff overlooking the Colorado River on the right. Mountain ranges are in the background on the left and right. Native American figures, goats and mesquite trees are in the foreground. The painting's title is printed beneath the image, and to its right is the signature of the fort's commanding officer, who may have commissioned the work: "Dan Loosley | Captain - Infantry | Commanding". The painting, which was prepared to be made into a lithograph, is signed with the initials F. K. in the lower right corner. F. Keller may possibly have been Francis Keller, who was a lithographer in Philadelphia from 1858-1860. |
