Description |
This painting depicts fifty-three flags, of which twenty-eight are the flags of various whaleship owners and the rest are international flags. It provides a very rare and early record of the whaling flags of Nantucket. The flags are shown in seven horizontal rows with each one identified underneath. The painting's title and the artist's name are printed across the top, along with the inscription: "For George Joy Nantucket August 19, 1828." Nothing is known about the artist. |
