Description |
This watercolor on ivory depicts a medium eye-level view of three sailing ships engaged in a cannon fight. The ships with tattered sails in the center and to the right are identified with British flags, and American flags are flying above the deck on the ship to the left. A hilly shoreline is in the distance, all under a partly cloudy sky. Michele Felice Cornè was born on the island of Elba and grew up in Naples, Italy. In 1800, the marine, landscape, portrait, and mural painter arrived in Salem, Massachusetts, where he helped establish the tradition of marine painting in that area. |
