Description |
This sampler, executed in blue, green, brown, pink, black and cream silk in variety of stitches (cross, chain, satin, queen, crosslet, stem, straight), was completed by Eliza Dutton when she was sixteen years old. The needlework shows a basket of blooming, fruiting vines and outer borders with additional blossoming vines in vases. Each corner is decorated with a silk ribbon rosette. The artist's name and the date of the piece is stiched beneath the central image. Born in Chichester Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Eliza Dutton was the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Lampley Dutton. In 1804 she married William Hannum Jr. of Concord Township and they had seven sons and five daughters. |
