Description |
This view from an avenue in Absecon, New Jersey depicts the Absecon Lighthouse situated within fenced grounds and flanked by several buildings. An American flag is flying from a pole at the grounds gate. Beyond the lighthouse, multiple sailing ships can be seen on the ocean, all beneath a cloudy sky. The painting is signed in the lower right: DJ Kennedy, Sept. 16, 1870. David Johnston Kennedy was born in Scotland, emmigrated to North America in 1838, and eventually settled in Philadelphia. He was a railroad agent and amateur painter who produced more than 1,000 paintings of scenes in and around Philadelphia. |
