Description |
This street scened depicts a busy intersection in mid-nineteenth-century Philadelphia, and is inscribed with "Northeast Corner of Broad and Filbert Streets, 1859". The signs above the building left of center advertise "LEHIGH & SCHUYKILL COAL and WOOD". The business is surrounded by other stores, stately homes, and other buildings clustered around streets lined with trolley or wagon tracks. The view is from above and across the street from the coal and wood store, through bare tree branches. Various figures on foot, riding horseback, or pulled by carriage are active in the scene. Joseph Shoemaker Russell was an amateur watercolorist and Philadelphia businessman who chiefly painted local buildings and interiors. |
