Description |
The Collection's eleven watercolors by James Peller Malcolm comprise one of the most important groups of Philadelphia views completed after the city became the national capital in 1790. This painting shows the Georgean-style mansion and surrounding estate of William Hamilton (1745–1813) overlooking the west bank of the Schuylkill River near Gray's Ferry. Three figures appear on a railed wooden bridge that stretches across the foreground. Born in Philadelphia, Malcolm completed this series of watercolors soon after returning to the city after three years of training at the Royal Academy in London. The paintings include scenes of public buildings in Philadelphia, nearby country estates, and local landscapes. Malcolm ultimately moved back to England permanently. |
