Description |
This scrimshawed sperm whale tooth on a maple base is decorated on one side with a spread eagle atop a shield surrounded by American flags, crossed cannons, and crossed swords. The motto, "E Pluribus Unum" (one comprised of many) is printed on the banner clutched in the eagle's beak. Many whale teeth were decorated with patriotic motifs, and the eagle was a favorite among scrimshaw artists. A full length portrait of a young girl is on the other side of the tooth. |
