Description |
The Collection's eleven watercolors by James Peller Malcolm comprise one of the most important groups of Philadelphia views completed after the city became the national capital in 1790. Shown in this painting is a large colonial house in an unfinished landscape. It is inscribed in pencil in the lower left corner: Mansion of Col. Gurney. Born in Philadelphia, Malcolm completed this series of watercolors soon after returning to the city after three years of training at the Royal Academy in London. The paintings include scenes of public buildings in Philadelphia, nearby country estates, and local landscapes. Malcolm ultimately moved back to England permanently. |
