Description |
This watercolor depicts the Union army marching in formation down the tree-lined, main street of Richmond, Virginia. Officers on horseback precede a row of drummers in front of a large column of soldiers, all uniformed in blue. A group of what appear to be freed slaves in the lower left corner are hailing the procession as other citizens watch from the sidewalks that border the cobblestone street. A fire is burning beyond the street scene in the background. The title of the work is inscribed below the image, and the painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. |
