Description |
This miniature painting by an unknown Chinese artist is one of a set of four owned by the Foundation. This view shows the foreign factories known as hongs in Canton (Guangzhou), China along the Pearl River. The western-style buildings, which were constructed in the 1750s, fly the Danish, Spanish, American, Swedish, British, and Dutch flags. Chinese junks in the foreground demonstrate the active commerce of the period. |
