Description |
This high eye-level view depicts four manned whaling boats pursuing a whale spewing bloody water at right lower center. A large whaling vessel at the middle left and three other ships in the background are all in full sail and listing in the rough water. Mountains loom in the distance to the right, and a cloudy sky fills the top two-thirds of the scene. Born in Simsbury Connecticut, Frederick Stiles Jewett studied art in England and France and was known for his maritime and landscape paintings. |
