Description |
This early view of Salt Lake City dates from one year after the city's founding by Brigham Young and a small group of Mormon pioneers who came to establish a religious utopia in the wilderness. In this scene, buildings ranging from one to three stories border the broad Main Street that cuts diagonally across the lower half of the painting. Various figures can be seen traversing the street and the sidwalk. Smaller structures dot the landscape behind the settlement and majestic mountains rise in the distance. The painting is dated 1848 and inscribed with the title in the lower left. |
