Description |
The Collection's eleven watercolors by James Peller Malcolm comprise one of the most important groups of Philadelphia views completed after the city became the national capital in 1790. A villa on the Schuylkill River belonging to David Beveridge is depicted in this scene. The Federal-style house with a hipped roof and portico is shown in the center of the painting surrounded by an expansive lawn with clusters of trees. An arched stone footbridge rests over a low spot near the waterway. Born in Philadelphia, Malcolm completed this series of watercolors soon after returning to the city after three years of training at the Royal Academy in London. The paintings include scenes of public buildings in Philadelphia, nearby country estates, and local landscapes. Malcolm ultimately moved back to England permanently. |
